Hi I'm back from OBS. The annoying thing was that I had a few songs stuck in my head that kept playing every time I tried to focus, which sucks. Anyway. OBS.

The highlights were high elements, kayaking and trekking.

High Elements:
Wasn't all that fun. So anyway I got stuck halfway up, not because of fear, because by then I wasn't scared anymore, but because my arms stiffened -.-. Pretty sure if they allowed us to use the wire at the side I would have had no problem.... Anyway, Huakai's side had it easier, which is why he was able to reach the top.

Kayaking:
On the second day after high elements we learned how to kayak, for those who didn't know, and kayaked from camp 1 to camp 2. We were told it was 1.5km. I was not able to verify this information. This was the easy part.
On the night we spent at camp 2, Huakai, Yaoqing, Jerome and me were chosen to be the leaders of the sea expedition team. So we sat down for awhile, planned and everything. We kayaked 12km around ubin(the long way) to reach Campsite 3. I took the single kayak this time, which turned out to not be such a good idea. After crossing Chek Jawa, the waves became !@#@$#%$^%^&* and my kayak kept getting blown towards shore by the wind while the waves underneath turned it right. This resulted in me being unable to stay in formation and honestly I felt like just sitting there and giving up. Obviously being me, I didn't, because....I'm me. And also because I would end up nowhere if I did. Anyway we made it to campsite a little earlier than expected, which was awesome. Even though campsite 3 had the lousiest "facilities", I had the most fun there, mostly because we were so close to nature. It really felt like an adventure. Shitting in a hole in the middle of a bunch of trees has to be one of the coolest experiences ever. Also because we had a lot of spare time and also the ground was comfortable cold so that actually, sleeping at that campsite was the best. Also, we slept through sentry duty. Just because my shirt says Security doesn't mean I am.

Trekking:
Night over, wake up in the morning. Fresh air, hustle and bustle. We now need to hike from camp 3 to camp 1. I look at the map. Okay, it's about 2-3km. Then we are told we have to hike to checkpoint one first, then possibly to other checkpoints and then to camp 1. Okay, not so bad. I look at the MGR of checkpoint one: eastern tip of Pulau Ubin. Camp 1 is at the western tip. !@##$%^&. Anyway we set off for the first checkpoint at about 9.20am and reach it at around 12pm. Slow pace, since it's only 7.28km. After lunch we are told we have very little time left, so the other checkpoints are cancelled and we head straight for camp 1. Our target is to reach it at 4.30. The distance is probably 13-15km, by my estimate. We set off at 1.55pm and set a brutal pace. We overtake 4 groups on the way, 2 of which I think left 1 hour before us. We reach the campsite at 4.42pm. Fun.

After the trekking thing, our group just got closer and everything. So the next day everyone was feeling like family. Pek Khoon objects but I do feel like she was a mother figure to the group.

Anyway, OBS was fun. I'm both glad and not so that it was over. I'm glad because the activities are so tiring and despite being outdoorsy I do not enjoy sleeping in a tent on cold hard ground every night. I am not so glad because it was actually quite fun spending time with everyone in the group. Anyway I did get stronger after OBS, as I expected, but no, I did not gain much weight, which is amazing. I was 57.2/3 kg before OBS and after OBS I'm now 57.5kg. I'm now closer to getting max points for NAPFA, which by the way was what I was thinking of when doing jetty jump.

Revelations, I guess I didn't really have any revelations. OBS just reaffirmed the beliefs I had, which, if you're interested, are as follows:
Believe in yourself
Pain is all in the mind
Limits are restrictions you put on yourself.
Never (gonna) give (you) up.  Subtle rickroll ftw.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
When in doubt, just wing it.
And something I learned watching Monty Python: Adopt, Adapt and Improve.

Oh yeah there is one other thing I learned.
When in deep shit, shut the fuck up. Reworded to suit this blog.
Glimpsed from a story told by our instructor Pei Lee.

Speaking of which, OBS instructors can tell very lame stories. Very. Lame. But, as Huakai would say, "quite cute la hor."

Anyway Pei Lee if you're somehow reading this, we can't find you on facebook.

Tock Seng Watch if you're reading this, do remember that I am immortal fruit, and not a banana.

OBS

This post isn't actually about OBS as the title implies, but I just thought I should write a post before I left for OBS.

*10 minute pause*

I have no idea what to write about. And it's not helping that the New Post page is completely white, which makes everything feel so blank.

If you guys haven't checked it out yet, demotivational posters are a great way to kill a bit of time. You can find them here.

For those of you who are even a little interested, I'm starting to train for NAPFA. Every year, it's the sit-ups that drag me down. But not this year. This year, I will get max points for NAPFA. Although I haven't done anything so far except planks daily. Gotta start doing sit ups more I guess

Forrest Gump is an awesome movie. I decided to watch it yesterday because there was a mention of Gump somewhere. Anyway, if you haven't watched it yet, go to youtube and search Forrest Gump part 1. If you're not a movie kind of person, there's also the book which the movie is based on, also titled Forrest Gump.

And that's all I have to say about that.

P.S. Just saying Hi to any new readers I may have gotten over the new year. Hi.

P.P.S. I neglected to mention this but I won't be active for the next 5 days. Probably not even for the 6th day. Expect to see posts only on the night of 30th January, and that's the best possible scenario.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Hi all. I'm supposed to be finishing the 800 word thingy for chinese now, but I can't focus. Anyway, I realized that I haven't had a "Happy new year / It's the new year!" post yet, and I feel like I sort of owe you guys one.

Happy new year. It's only 2 weeks late. The past year has really....really..... gone by really fast. Let's put it into perspective. Year 1 felt like sitting on bus 97 from our old campus at Malan Road to Jurong East mrt. Year 2 felt like walking from Boon Lay to Chinese Garden. Year 3 was like taking MRT from Pioneer to Boon Lay. What will Year 4 be like? I think asking these kind of questions are sort of pointless. The only way you'll find out is by waiting anyway.

So.....With new year, comes new year resolutions. I don't remember my resolutions from last year, so chances are I never accomplished them, apart from those few probably related to Parkour. I'll admit that though it's been a really fast year, from 1st Jan 2009 to 31st Dec 2009, I've improved so much, and there's still so much more to go. While many of the people I know in PKSG have made/are thinking of making a progression video already, I don't really have any intentions of doing so. I won't even think about making a video until someone asks me to, which will probably be like never. I don't really see the need to tell people about how far I've progressed, as long as I know how much I have progressed, and how much more I have to go(which, by the way, is an infinitely long way). Maybe it's because I'm just not a people person, or maybe that's the way it should be, but who cares?

So. New year resolutions. What do I want to do this year? Well around the middle of last year I actually made a to-do list to be completed before my birthday this year, which, by the way, is 3RD AUGUST. I guess it's a good idea to make those my new year resolutions.

15 pull ups. This one should be easy. As long as I stick to a training regiment it shouldn't be hard. Which doesn't really say much because training regiments to me are like order to chimpanzees. They will forever be chaotic and no matter how hard you try, chimps will never line up for food.

Reach basketball hoop. This one has to do with my jump height. Currently I can reach the bottom of the metal thing that the hoop is attached to the board by. Hopefully with a bit more training I can boost my jump height by that amount, at least.

Master b-kick. Amazingly I STILL haven't got this one. I need more practice.

Run to new school campus. From home, of course. I estimate a 2.4km linear distance, but of course the map could be wrong and I may not run in a completely straight line. So I could very well be running 3km and thinking that I'm running 2.4. I'm not sure whether that's a good thing.

Eat philly cheesteak. Self-explanatory.

15 sec handstand. This is to build upper body endurance, and overall balance. Also, it looks cool. But mostly the balance and upper body thing. Currently my record is about 7 seconds, so I'd say I'm pretty close.

So what other new year resolutions do I have? Well this being the second week of school I've made some resolutions about....school.

I will do my chinese homework. Because.

I will find some way to retaliate if Half-bald decides to be a jackass. Regarding Half-bald, all I can say that he's a staff member, if you don't realise who he is. And yes, Half-bald is a He.

I will not be too sarcastic/hurting towards classmates because they are my only lifeline during O levels for HCL. Hmmm......I will TRY.

I will grow taller than Jean.

I will not play so much basketball/soccer that I am incapacitated and am unable to do homework.

I will do homework.

I will at least try to do homework if I am unable to complete it.

I will at least pretend to try if I don't even feel like trying.

I will not leave shoe prints all over walls in the school should I feel like trying something out, but will instead leave FOOTprints if I have to, because my soles are not as immediately recognizable as the soles of my shoes.

Ok guys I know I promised some of you an update a while ago..... but in the words of Eminem from his song "Stan", "but I just been busy".

Anyways, I've really been busy, just with stuff that you people may not find as interesting. Here's a list of what I've done over the past 2(almost) months if you REALLY want to know:
Played Shaiya
Played Blackshot
Researched the crafting of Bows
Looked for a whole bunch of songs, here's a list of songs I've added to my playlist since 6th November, my last post:
Joshua Radin - Winter
Journey - Don't Stop Believin'
Nena - 99 Luftballons
Colin Hay - Overkill
The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated
The entire DMC 4 special soundtrack album
The Imperial March
Tom Jones - It's Not Unusual
Beatles - Let It Be and Come Together
John Lennon - Imagine
Wolfmother - Woman
Guns 'n' Roses - Don't Cry (1987 version)
Diamond Head - Am I Evil
Kreator - Impossible Brutality
Metallica - Invisible Kid
Mat Weddle's acoustic cover of Hey Ya

Now, back to things I've done over the past 2 months
Watched Scrubs
Watched 3 episodes of House
Had a debate with myself lasting 2 seconds regarding whether I should be vegetarian.
Learned about baseball
Learned the German word for toy balloon(luftballon)
Revisited Rock from the 70s,80s and 90s.
Watched a stand-up routine by Robin Williams on youtube
Done almost no homework
Blasted music loud enough to make the walls vibrate
Played basketball
Some training here and there.
Played flash games on MoFunZone
Generally wasted a lot of time online doing crap
Read The Last Guardian
Re-Read Cell by Stephen King 3 times, making it a total of 4.

Probably a lot more other stuff, but I seem to have forgotten. Anyway I started the post wanting to write about something but because of that long list I just wrote out I forgot what it was. This post was just to let you guys know I'm still alive anyway. Ok seeya.

Ok never mind I came up with something to write about.

Seriously, what is the deal with Korean boy groups? Notice I don't say bands. That's because they're not bands, really. If you want to be called a band, you have to play an instrument. Therefore, boy GROUP.
And quite frankly their "music" is horrible. It just gets really annoying. If I want to hear something mediocre repeated over and over again, I listen to either the badger song or the llama song. And girls going crazy about them isn't helping my impression of them. I know that sounds a lot like something a jealous prick would say, but it's not because girls like them that I don't like them. It's because of those annoying fangirls who squeal/shriek/scream/other annoying action whenever they see a picture of the group, or whenever they're mentioned, it just makes me want to punch both the fangirl(s) involved and the boy group. It's also because they aren't really anything much, and yet people are obsessed with them. You don't see me bashing Greg Valentino when people admire his ridiculously huge arms. In summary, fangirls, you can like them, just don't do any of the following when people are around:
Play their music really loudly
Scream
Squeal
Shriek
Try to convert people into liking them (I swear it's almost a religion)

Since we're on the subject on fangirls, I'd like to talk about Edward Cullen as well. Most of you know my disposition towards him but I'm gonna say it anyway. Robert Pattinson is not hot. Edward Cullen is a creepy stalker. Seriously, he looks like a slightly(ONLY SLIGHTLY) thinner version of Jack Black. Don't believe me, here are two pics for comparison:

Now why don't I hate Jack Black even though Robert Pattinson looks like him? Because he's cool. He's fat, and proud of it. He's an awesome rocker, and he's funny. Robert Pattinson.....
Anyway, I don't really mind that people like Robert Pattinson. He does what he needs to make money. Now Edward Cullen is.....he's a lousy guy.

He's way older than Bella. It's like dating someone your great grandpa's age.
He sparkles in the sun. Really, Stephanie Meyer? That was the best you could think of?
Sneaks into bedroom to watch Bella sleep. Ok man we know you love her but..that shit is crazy.
Stalks Bella wherever she goes. Same point as watching her sleep
Control freak. Same point as above.

That said, I'm not really understanding how people can go crazy over Edward Cullen. He's crazy and creepy, and he's as old as your great grandpa.

Things that tick me off.

I'm bored, so lucky you, here's an update.

Today's post will be about things that tick me off.

Things that tick me off:
People who abruptly cross my path within 20cm.
People who stare at me when I'm in scout uniform
People who walk really slowly and don't realize they're blocking a whole bunch of people.
People who think humans are superior to all other life on this planet.

Things that make me want to punch someone in the face:
People who glare at me.
People who wear sunglasses INDOORS (EXCEPT Horatio Caine/David Caruso. Because he's cool like that)
People who don't shut up after being told more than once by different people.
People who lie blatantly and refuse to admit it.
People who eat fast food then opt for "healthier choices". It's fast food.
People who condemn a man before judging the facts themselves.
People who run for the escalator at boon lay mrt, but walk when they get off the escalator.
People who are willing to walk an extra 20 meters to take the lift as opposed to taking the escalator(except of course those with prams, heavy luggage, sick people and pregnant ladies.)
People who listen to chipmunk versions of songs. It's really annoying, people.
People who acknowledge the existence of a genre of music known as "Pop Rock". It's like saying Homosexual Heterosexual. Pop and Rock are TWO DIFFERENT GENRES THAT CAN NEVER BE FUSED.
People who sing parts of songs in an endless loop. Regardless how awesome the song is, even singing the whole song over and over again can get annoying, let alone just parts of it.
People(This one only applies to males) who wear skinnies without fulfilling one of the following criteria:
Be a Rock Star
Be pure awesome.
Be very muscular.

People who are SERIOUSLY trying to be someone they're not, e.g. Singaporeans acting Ang Moh, white guys acting gangsta.
People who beat up other people for just looking in their direction, though they call it "staring".
People who act tough but run from confrontations.
People who like Twilight/Edward Cullen/Anything related to GLITTERING VAMPIRES.
People who have no sense of humour.
People who scream at everything.
People who are fat, but fully capable of slimming down.
People who think music can be "satanic" and that Stairway to Heaven actually plays a satanic message when reversed.
People born between 1980 and 1997 who cannot recognize the riff from Smoke On the Water
People who think Scrubs is a show about cleaning the house.
People who are not in awe of Steven Tyler's mouth.

That is all. By the way you may have noticed the addition of the twitter thing above. I saw Lum Wan shopping for winter wear at JP and thought, "if only I could post this to my blog now". There are so many things that are interesting which do not warrant a full blog post, hence, twitter.

This is my......5th? 6th? untitled post. It's simply because I'd rather get right to the topic and not waste unnecessary time on thinking of a title.

Anyway, the past 1 or 2 weeks I've spent listening to the old bands, hearing covers and stuff. I was reading up on Kurt Cobain(guitarist and singer of the band Nirvana) and I got to the part about him supposedly killing himself. His suicide note said that he hadn't felt the excitement of listening and creating music in years. I was thinking then about how music has changed over the past 30 years. There's no point even comparing the bands from the 80s and 90s with the bands now because when you think about it, Boys Like Girls? Really?

Then you read up on the old bands. Guns 'n' Roses, Nirvana, The Beatles, Led Zep....some great bands have broken up because of factors that were beyond our control. With GnR, it's an inevitable dispute because all of them were really powerful, and power clashes. Nirvana, Kurt died. Beatles, only Paul is alive now. And with Led Zep, John Bonham died. And I was thinking, with these guys gone, will music like that ever come by again? Slowly -- ok maybe not so slowly, pop is taking over today's generation. We have people saying Jonas Brothers are "really talented". COME ON! Really talented is Metallica. Really talented, Slash! John Lennon! Robert Plant! Jimmy Page! These people are really talented, not gay guys who get millions just for being able to hold a guitar and whine on stage. I would list more names but this post would just become a really long list.

So people, do you want music like they used to make it, out of 100% awesome, or do you want thousands of gay fags with guitars diluting music because they want chicks and money? Oppose the rise of gay music. See what it's done to bands like Linkin' Park. Used to rock, don't rock now. More and more we see people making music for money, not for music.

I don't think bands like GnR, Led Zep, will come by again, judging by the way music is going now. This makes it all the more sad if the 2012 prophecy doesn't come true. If it does, there's only 3 more years of bad music to endure. If it doesn't, the world is rather permanently screwed. So what we can do is to keep their flame alive. Keep the good music here. Some people have asked me, "Why are you listening to that song? It's so old." Well guess what, we listen to music because it's good, not because those songs are new. Doesn't make a damn difference if the song came out in 10,000 BC or AD 2009.

Epiphany

Just last night I had an epiphany while lying on bed trying to sleep. I don't know why, but I get all my epiphanies when I'm trying to sleep. It's like the Epiphany Toilet from scrubs..except it's a bed. Anyway.

Some of you may recall that awhile ago I questioned the meaning of life, why we live. I believe I have found a satisfactory answer(to me at least) for those questions. Now the big question: Why do we live?
My friend Austin said, "Because we don't want to die." While he has a point there(yes, austin...) I don't think that's it. A couple weeks ago I was watching an interview of David Belle and he was talking about how when he does training some people stare at him. He gave an analogy and said that if you press pause just when a monkey is in mid-air, and you ask him, "Why are you doing that? Why are you moving?", then the monkey would just say, "And you? Why are you NOT moving?" Of course I've watched this interview a couple of times, but it didn't pop into my head then.

Last night I was posting a reply on the forums, and it made me think again about the meaning of everything. I thought again about the interview, and I realized that it's all in the perspective. Instead of "Why?", ask yourself, "Why not?". When you want to do something, and you feel the hesitation, and you ask, "why do I want to do this", instead you should think, "Why not?" and if you can't give yourself a reasonable answer, then you know that you should just go ahead. Now some of you might be going, "DUH" but be honest with yourself: have you seen things this way before? There is a difference between UNDERSTANDING a perspective and actually ADOPTING that perspective. Once you stop asking yourself Why and start saying Why not instead, all of a sudden, you see possibilities, because if your whole life you're going, "why?", you will just be restricted by your fears. The answer to the question, "Why do we live?", then, from this perspective would become, "Why not?" Because you're gonna die one day, and the length of your life does not actually change the fact that you WILL die, why not live life to the max? Do you have any reason not to?

Armed with this perspective, go out into the world and look at the things around you. Why? Why not? This being said, I am going to attempt to master backflip again tomorrow, even though the last time I tried I panicked mid-flip, fell on my back and slammed my knee into my face. Shed your inhibitions, and you will learn that life becomes so much better.

WTF.

Hi all. Let me give you a little background before I reveal a shocking piece of information. The time is 2355 hrs, and I'm doing my bio assignment(I DO HOMEWORK). I get bored, so I decide to google my name.

*Opens Chrome*
*Types in "Ooi Teck Chye"*
*Views results*

*1st result: A compo I wrote in P6 that was kept on my primary school website. I read it. They edited it. Those chimps.*

*2nd result: (and this is it, brace yourself)

For those of you too lazy to click the picture and read....here's what the circled parts say.
Circled Sentence 1: Fear of imminent execution
Circled Sentence 2: Ooi Teck Chye, aged 46, Fishmonger
Circled sentence 3: Ooi Teck Chye was sentence to death on 11 September 1991 after being convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of possession of heroin

And I'm sure you guys can see the big WTF in the middle. My mind has currently been blown away by this. I think this is the only guy with the full official name of Ooi Teck Chye in the world apart from me...and he's a loser?

This ranks about a 7 on the Scale of Calamitous Events:
1: I wrote a bad story
2: A bunny died
3: 2 bunnies died
4: Bunny massacre
5: Some funny guy died.
6: Someone I know well died.
7: I died.
8: I died, came back, and died again
9: Many people died
10: 0h n0es 1t'5 t3h ap0c4lyps3 lolololol wtfbbq lollerskaters roflcopter !!!!11!1one!!!
11: A really cute girl died
12: More than one really cute girl died.

I've been able to hit under a minute for 400m at night woots. 59.75 secs if my watch can be trusted(it can). I'm not sure though. Felt like the track I was running(at the neighbourhood park near my house) was more of 380m or 370m. Gonna try on school track someday. I run faster at night anyway. It's more cooling.

Sniping under a second in blackshot woots.

Updates

Harlow finally updating since I'm sure all of you miss me. You know, you reader things are weird. Whether I update or not I hardly get any comments so it seems like no one is reading. That doesn't help motivate me you know?

On a lighter note, I got a yoyo. It has a nylon bearing that is supposed to allow it to sleep longer. However, when first practicing my tricks I tangled up my string incessantly, and had to keep using my hands to manually untangle it from the bearing. I rubbed off a lot of the lubricant in the process and decided to use some oil to substitute. Now the bearing is too slippery so I can hardly throw a proper sleeper. Someone give me $25 so I can go buy a new yoyo..?

Nothing much has happened for the past few weeks. It's just boring, boring....boring. I haven't watched any Scrubs in a while since all the links I can find are to videos from Megavideo which has a dickheaded max viewing limit so you can only watch a certain number of minutes of videos each day. That's not the annoying thing. The annoying thing is that it keeps mistaking my IP for other people, which causes me to be unable to even watch a few minutes each day, since other people have used up the time. Which just sucks. Maybe I'll just use my bro's registered account to watch.

Regarding my yoyo, I'm rather happy with the progress I've made. In 3 days, I've remastered the basics:
Sleeper
Forward Pass
Walk the Dog
Rock the Baby,

as well as mastered a few extra moves:
Around the World
Around the Corner
Breakaway
Trapeze

and almost mastered Loop the Loop.

Unfortunately due to the aforementioned bearing problem I've been unable to perfect the Trapeze...so......argh...
